What Is Dental Bone Grafting?

Dental bone grafting and augmentation are procedures that increase the amount of bone in the jaw or other areas of the mouth, usually to prepare for restorative treatments such as implants, bridges, or dentures. Grafts also help regenerate lost tissue or repair a defect in the jaw. Several types are commonly used: an autograft takes bone from another area of the body, an allograft uses donor tissue, a synthetic graft builds the area up with man-made material, and a xenograft occasionally uses animal bone. Our dentist recommends the option that fits your situation.

The Benefits of Dental Bone Grafting

Implant Stability

Additional bone provides the stable base that a dental implant needs, which is exactly what makes long-term success possible after a tooth has been lost.

Ridge Preservation

Grafting rebuilds and reshapes the alveolar ridge so that a bridge or a denture can then be positioned correctly and be worn comfortably every single day.

Neighboring Support

Reinforcing the area protects the surrounding teeth from mobility and from the additional bone loss that tends to spread outward from there as time passes.

Oral Health

Grafting helps prevent future dental problems, particularly for individuals with advanced periodontal disease or with another cause of lost bone density.

Our Step-by-Step Process

The procedure follows a predictable sequence from imaging through healing.

  1. 01

    Imaging Review

We take X-rays to determine whether your bone is lacking in density and where an augmentation would end up doing the most good for you.

  2. 02

    Local Anesthetic

A local anesthetic is first administered to the area where the bone graft is going to be placed, well before any of the work begins.

  3. 03

    Site Access

Our dentist then creates a small opening in the gum tissue, exposing the affected area of the jawbone that lies directly underneath.

  4. 04

    Graft Placement

Synthetic or donor bone is grafted onto the affected area, and any of the remaining gaps are filled in with more grafting material.

  5. 05

    Closure Step

The gum tissue is then closed back up, and antibiotics may be administered afterward to help the whole site heal cleanly and quickly.

Signs You May Need Dental Bone Grafting

Grafting enters the conversation in several predictable circumstances.

  • Planned Implant — Your jawbone is too weak to support a dental implant, or it is too shallow for other restorative procedures to succeed there.

  • Recent Extraction — Removing a tooth triggers a natural bone resorption around the socket, and a graft placed on that same day prevents the loss.

  • Bone Loss — Advanced gum infection has eaten away at the bone underneath, leaving the teeth surrounding it without the support that they need.

  • Missing Teeth — Several teeth are gone from the same area, and the ridge needs rebuilding before a bridge or a denture will fit there correctly.

  • Dr. Dabirian is professional, and gentle. As a woman who does not enjoy dental visits, he always makes the experience warm and friendly while thoroughly explaining everything he's doing and why it's important which was very comforting and distracting (during numbing shots he did it seamlessly!) If you visit you'll know you're coming to a professional who actually cares. The office is also nice and clean.

  • Recently visited. Had to leave my dentist office of which I was a pt for over 20 years due to his retirement The new owners didn't have my insurance. You can imagine after having the same dr for yrs I was apprehensive. The staff at Canyon Country Dental were extremely nice. I received very good service. Xrays we're done very efficiently. Jollee was professional and quick to make what can be an uncomfortable procedure, doable. I read that sometimes they upsell. However, I feel the extra services they offer are all optional and there is no pressure to buy. They are current and offer up to date services ie your chart is electronical and you can access it from your phone. I think I will be very content with my care at this office.

  • I've seen Dr. Dabirian three times now (one general cleaning/X-rays, and two visits for fillings), and I can confidently say he's the best dentist I've ever had. From the moment I walked into the clinic, it's so so clear Dr. Dabirian cares about the patient experience. He explains everything he's doing before and during treatment, walks through X-rays in detail, and never leaves you wondering what's happening in your own mouth. But I have to give Dr. D his flowers for the tiny details! Just a few examples: during numbing injections, he'd gently shake my cheek to help distract from a pinch; he gives me a squishy mouth block to help relax my jaw; after a filling, he asks over and over how my bite feels, happily making tiny adjustments until it feels as close to my natural bite as possible. Marta is fantastic too. The two of them have great banter, and every visit feels like visiting folks who have known me for 20 years. The office itself is clean, spacious, and comfortable. They use digital forms and text reminders that make everything easy peasy. Most importantly, Dr. Dabirian is just a genuinely kind person who's clearly passionate about helping people. I recommend Canyon Country Dental Care without hesitation. (And at the time of writing this, they accept Medi-Cal patients!)

  • Let me start by saying Dr. Dabirian and his team are GREAT! After recently moving to Santa Clarita (2 years ago lol) and not wanting to drive 40 min to my old dentist, I finally bit the bullet and to find someone closer. I am so happy I found Canyon Country Dental and they are absolutely awesome. I dont feel like he is trying to get me to do unnecessary work and he explains everything as he goes. His assistant (Martha) is sweet and makes me feel comfortable and well taken care of. I am so glad I found them as i am not to keen on going to the dentist...hence the 2 year postponement lol

  • By far the best dental office and experience I've ever had. For years I have been trying to find a good dental office and good Doctor but have been struggling which put me off getting a cleaning for about a year and a half. When I called canyon country dental care it was actually the Dental Doctor who answered and was very professional and honest right away. This office is extremely clean and located in a very nice plaza. Dr Dabirian spent his time thoroughly with me and made sure all of my questions were answered. You also cannot beat the price for everything I got done which was X-rays and a dental cleaning. I am so glad I found my new dental office!

How much does dental bone grafting cost?

In general, you can expect to pay anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. The cost of dental bone grafting in Canyon Country, CA, depends on the type of procedure, the complexity of the case, and the amount of materials required.

Does insurance cover bone grafting?

In some cases, grafting is covered, so we check with your insurance provider first to confirm. If dental bone grafting in Canyon Country, CA, is not covered, you may be able to finance the costs involved.

When is bone grafting recommended?

Grafting is typically recommended after bone has been lost to periodontal disease, tooth loss, trauma, or congenital defects. It is also used to restore the shape of the jawbone so it can support dental implants.

Is a graft always needed after an extraction?

Most bone grafts are installed on the same day as the tooth extraction to prevent resorption around the socket. They are not necessary when removing baby teeth or wisdom teeth.

What types of bone grafts are used?

Autografts use bone from another area of your own body, while allografts use donor tissue. Synthetic grafts build the area up with man-made material and are extremely popular, and xenografts occasionally use animal bone.

Can grafting be combined with other procedures?

Additional procedures may be performed during the same appointment, including placing dental implants or preparing the jawbone for a prosthetic tooth. Grafting is also frequently paired with periodontal therapy and sinus lift surgery.

Does grafting help beyond implants?

Grafting improves overall oral health and helps prevent future dental problems, especially where advanced periodontal disease has caused density loss. It also reinforces the integrity of any adjacent teeth.

What happens if the ridge has collapsed?

When a patient loses a tooth, the alveolar ridge that supports the teeth may become compromised. Grafting rebuilds and reshapes that ridge so an implant, bridge, or denture can be placed in the correct position.
